On April 8, 2026,UPD organized a transformative session at Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Malawi as part of its ongoing commitment to promoting inclusion and dignity for refugees living with disabilities

The session was conducted under the project “Breaking Stigma and Providing Support for Refugees with Disabilities in Malawi,” with support from the Disability Rights Fund
Bringing together 40 participants, including media influencers, community representatives and care givers, the session focused on the theme:
“Mitigating Mental Health Stigma within the Refugee Community through Social Media Campaigns

Mental health stigma remains one of the biggest barriers faced by refugees with disabilities. Misconceptions, discrimination, and lack of awareness often prevent individuals from accessing the support they need
This session aimed to address these challenges by exploring how social media can be used as a powerful tool to:
- Amplify the voices of persons with disabilities
- Raise awareness about mental health
- Challenge negative stereotypes
- Promote inclusive narratives

Participants engaged in interactive discussions, shared experiences, and practical ideas on how to create impactful digital campaigns that foster inclusion and understanding.
At UPD, we strongly believe that disability should never be a barrier to opportunity. Our mission is to create an inclusive society where refugees with disabilities are empowered, supported, and given equal opportunities to thrive.
Through initiatives like this, UPD continues to lead efforts in breaking stigma and building a more inclusive future in Malawi
